Demystifying Social Media: Tactics and Tools to Help You Get in the Game

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Social Media. It’s the big talk in almost any room you walk into lately. It’s making and breaking companies’ reputations. It’s transforming lowly bloggers into insty-celebrities. It’s changing the nature of communications, marketing and sales and yes… event planning.

But something’s been missing in all this buzz…

How do you actually do this stuff?
In this session we’ll look behind the hype and dig into the specifics (don’t worry, I’ll leave the techy lingo at the door). What is it? How does it work? How do you fit this stuff into your already busy workload? And how do you jump in the “social media” water without feeling like you’re going to drown?

We’ll talk about how to develop a strategy, build your toolkit of social media resources and identity which applications are right for you (Twitter? Facebook? Blogs?). Then we’ll go over some basic steps to help you get started putting social media to work for your business or your events.

You will leave this workshop with:

  • A better understanding of the social media landscape, how you can fit into it, and how to use it to market your business or events;
  • A basic roadmap and skill set for navigating the tools of the trade;
  • Your own burgeoning social network of meeting professionals, and
  • A tool kit of informational resources to take back to the office.

Be sure to bring your questions (and your smart phones if you want to follow the live Twitter stream). A discussion on social media just wouldn’t feel right if you did have a chance to… you know… BE social.

Jennifer Kane Jennifer Kane, principal of Kane Consulting, has served as a pseudo mom, personal coach and armchair therapist for a wide range of businesses, nonprofits and professional associations. She has more than 15 years of experience in marketing, communications and strategic planning, as well as extensive experience planning, producing and marketing professional development events. With the ability to understand big picture strategy and translate it into today’s tactical to-do lists and technologies, Jennifer has helped many businesses clarify their vision and achieve their goals and is a sought after planner, speaker, trainer, writer and facilitator. Jennifer is a member of the Editorial Board for Minnesota Meetings and Events Magazine and is on the Ambassador Council for Author Teleseminars. Most recently she has been speaking to groups about social media strategy and how to use social media tools such as Twitter to grow businesses and careers.
