President’s Message

This month has been tough for me; my aunt died. She was 83, and my mom’s only sister. My aunt was an amazing woman. She was a Catholic nun until she left the convent in her 40’s. Then she was a hospital administrator in South Dakota and St Paul. She served on various boards throughout the years and was the chair for a large fundraiser. When I was young she scared me a little; I’m not sure if it was her habit (traditional nun clothing) or her decisive personality.

Over the years I came to understand her softer side. At her memorial service, so many people came up to my mom and told her how my aunt had made such a difference in their lives. One woman, who worked at a hospital where my aunt was the administrator, explained how my aunt encouraged her through a very difficult time. My aunt invested in this woman and a great many others. This made me think about myself and the impact we can have on each other both in our workplace and when we volunteer. The next time you have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, make the investment. What greater gift than to know we were an encouragement to others and took the extra step, made the investment in someone and made a difference.

If you are an MPI member, make a difference to our chapter by filling out two surveys you will receive during March: one from MPI International and one from our chapter. Why two, you ask? Our chapter bylaws state that the Minnesota Chapter will conduct a survey every other year. This helps us ask specific questions about our programs, our chapter communications and your overall satisfaction with our chapter. This feedback will help the Minnesota Chapter Board plan for the next two years. The International survey will ask questions about your membership, communication coming from International, and chapter programs.

It is important that you complete both surveys. Our chapter receives a membership satisfaction rating based on our score on the MPI International Survey. Based on our rating our chapter can receive financial and programming benefits from MPI International. The more responses we have to these two surveys, the better our ability to meet member needs.

Hi Sue, Thanks for sharing such a personal story. Your aunt would be very proud of you and in away, you have kept her legacy alive by the volunteer work you do for MPI. Thanks, and yes, I will do BOTH surveys. Jan

Editor’s Note

Susan BormannAs the calendar page turns to February the Valentine’s Day marketing machine has kicked into high gear. What’s a single girl to do? Everything seems to be about romance and activities to do as a couple. It’s enough make me have a pity party with a heart-shaped box of chocolates alone on the couch in front of my favorite TV show. But wait, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Valentines Day is all about love, and you don’t have to have a significant other to celebrate love. Remember when you were little and brought Valentine's Day cards for your whole class? Revive that tradition with funny cards and cute or thoughtful little gifts for the people who brighten your life, from your best friend to the coworker who you eat lunch with every day. It's a great way to expand the circle of Valentine's Day cheer from just boyfriend-girlfriend stuff to a whole range of friends and family.

You can also give yourself the gift of love. Sign up for that cooking class, finish reading the book you never have time for, or unplug for the night with a bowl of popcorn and your favorite movie. Valentines Day is the time to love yourself as well as the others who make your life special.

If you have a significant other this is a great time to show that person how much they mean to you and go out of your way to do something special. The point is that Valentines Day is the holiday of love, and we each need to make someone else feel special and appreciated who contributes to our lives. Pay love forward. Happy Valentine’s Day.

CMP ReCertification is Due

Brenda EricksonHere it is, this monkey on my back:  CMP recertification is due. What to do for a point or two? See what my MPI membership can do.

Simple. Go to MPI, click the bold box at the upper right - Professional Development on Demand, and instantly I am back to school.

Select an opportunity. There are a myriad of options in fact: 258 hours of educational offerings and 201 CEU- approved for the CMP. My head spun until I engaged the sorter tabs and selected by topic, media and level. Topics sort by area. Media by webinar, video and audio. Or see them all.

I selected something that is a passion for me and chose the webinar: APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Event Standards, marked with the blue check on the CMP triangle, and gained more than I expected.

  • Reviewed new standards, where to find them (Go to MPI’s Corporate Responsibility tab), and tools to use to make a plan.
  • Became familiar with a clear, calm, articulate and informed speaker. I’d seek her out again.
  • Practiced some acronyms, of course. APEX/ASTM Accepted Practices Exchange /American Society of Testing & Measurement. I diverted briefly to the ASTM site. I organized adventure activities so it was relevant, too.
  • One whole CEU credit!
  • ...to name a few

The class. It couldn’t have been easier. Being online allowed me to check references as we went through the agenda. Take the webinars in real time and send questions.

The Credit. Webinar complete, click Claim Credit. Voila, it shows up in my Personal Continuing Education Units file online, where I can also record other credits. Wow, I said.

An hour and my membership dollars well spent. Now to the CMP application. MPI won’t do that work for me.

We are all stars: it’s the nature of our business. But who are the super stars of the Minnesota Chapter of MPI in 2011-12? Who has demonstrated great leadership? What company showed magnanimous support to the chapter and the meetings and events industry in general? Was there an outstanding meeting or event that utilized MPI resources and/or new technologies? Who have you learned from and been proud of their impact on our industry?

Mid-Winter Mingle

The next installation of MPI MN Mingles happens 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 8 at Pittsburgh Blue at the Edina Galleria. There is more at stake than scrumptious thick-cut onion rings, red velvet cupcakes, and hanging with my MPI mates.

At this Mingle, we kick-off EMPI season with a quiz about the program. Bone up at the EMPI page and get in the running for $25 gift certificates for Pittsburgh Blue and bottles of vino to take home for your very own. Get thee to the registration place and let us know you’ll be there.

Everyday Leader

One of the efforts of the Leadership Development Committee is to recognize everyday leaders within the chapter. These leaders among us are people who go above and beyond to make sure our chapter goals and objectives are met or exceeded.

This month, we recognize Susan Bormann from International Dairy Queen. She was nominated by Lisa Marie Borchert from Allianz Life Insurance Company who had this to say about Susan’s leadership abilities:

Nominated by Lisa Marie Borchert, Allianz Life Insurance Company
Susan is doing a fantastic job as Editor of Meeting of the Minds in her first year. There is a lot of detail to pull together and proof from a lot of different sources and it could be very easy to overlook or miss a submission. Hopefully you have seen continuous improvements to the organization and layout of the newsletter. This month Susan was left without an assistant editor as both people would had helped in the past were out on medical. She pulled it together alone over the holidays and days before her biggest meeting of the year. Susan is doing an outstanding job keeping our members informed of what the other committees/programs in our chapter are doing, while also keeping our Communications looking extremely professional.

Board Profile

Gretchen Harrington
Gretchen Harrington
MotivAction
gharrington@motivaction.com

Director of Leadership Development, Gretchen Harrington, has a LOT to say about how much she has gained from her involvement in MPI. Previously a member of the San Diego, CA Chapter of MPI, she joined the MN Chapter when she relocated to the Twin Cities and found herself in a new city with a very limited network. “Joining MPI MN allowed me to build business relationships so much faster in a new city,” Gretchen says.

Gretchen has experienced a not-so-typical career arc over the years. Not only has she worked on both the supplier and planner side, she leveraged her industry knowledge into retail as well, partnering with DMCs to drive business into the retail market.

Given her rather non-traditional background, Gretchen is especially passionate about mentoring. “My varied background allows me an opportunity to help industry professionals consider ways to expand their professional opportunities,” Gretchen explains. “Meeting planning isn’t just about working in a hotel, there are lots of other ways to use these skills in unique capacities.”

Gretchen was approached by chapter leadership to consider a board position. “Never underestimate the power of asking somebody to volunteer,” Gretchen says. “This really goes for any of us. People want to be involved but don’t always know how to help. Ask somebody flat out to step up. You’d be surprised how often they say yes!”

While excited to assume the role of Vice-President of Leadership Development next year, Gretchen is grateful for this year’s experience as Director. “I continue to learn so much about how the Chapter operates and what will be expected of me next year.” Gretchen looks forward to working to define clear roles within the Leadership Development Committee and to emphasize the importance of each of these positions on the team.

Leadership Development and the entire chapter will benefit from Gretchen’s passion for our industry and her commitment to mentoring and personal development.

EMPI Winner: Outstanding Chapter Member

What does winning an EMPI mean to you?
Lisa said it was an honor just to be nominated. To know that other members thought she did a good enough job to be nominated was great itself. Winning was just an added bonus.

Where do you display your award?
It is on a shelf in her cube at the corporate office.

What are you most proud of in your life?
Taking on a job that other members didn't want to do. Knowing that her role helped the chapter meet its goals during the two years she chaired sponsorship.

Anytime, she would take on a leadership role within an organization she never thought about the awards or what was in it for her. She just wanted to know how she could help the organization reach its goals. By doing this, if awards or benefits came with it, that was all just a bonus.

He likes to stay active and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including golf, tennis, skiing, cycling and fly fishing. His passion for travel is one of the reasons he chose to get into this business.

How did you get involved in the meetings industry?
Having attended numerous travel incentive programs and off-site meetings while working in the investment business for many years, he has become acutely aware of the impact properly structured travel incentives, meetings and events have on employees. With his clientele consisting of senior executives and business owners, he recognized an opportunity to leverage his experience with travel incentives and meetings from the client’s perspective, and took a sales job with a start-up incentive marketing company. The first piece of business he sold was a national sales meeting for a former client.

January Meeting Recap

Katie RessieThe first MPI MN monthly meeting for 2012 was celebrated on January 18th. Thank you to all members and guests who attended, as well as our hosts, Bayview Event Center and our audio visual sponsor AVEX.

This month, we had the honor of hosting national speaker and President of Pennington Performance Group, Randy Pennington, who discussed the topic, “Earn the Right to Lead: How to Expand Your Influence by Increasing Your Credibility.” With over 160 attendees, he captivated, educated and entertained everyone.

Randy began with a powerful definition of leadership. He described leadership as, “The art of influencing the actions of others to achieve results.” This definition brought “oohs & aahs” from the audience and created great discussion as Randy asked the group to converse within each table about “who influences you.”

Next, Randy educated the group on the “Six C’s for Earning & Sustaining Credibility & Trust.” These key features are important when trying to build your credibility – not only as an employee or employer, but as a co-worker or friend. The “Six C’s” are:

  • Character
  • Competence
  • Consistency
  • Communication
  • Courage
  • Caring or concern

Can you guess what the two most important C’s are? They are: Communication and Character. These 2 components are the foundation of building your credibility as a leader.

To wrap things up, Randy touched on four action steps you can take to better yourself as a leader:

First, he suggested to focus on who and what you are. “Character is destiny,” is a famous quote by Heraclitus, which he used to empower the first action.

The second action step is: hold onto your core. The main point to consider is, whether you will think well of yourself when you think back on your decisions. Really think about your actions, decisions and intentions before making a move in your career or personal life.

Third, remember the FFP Principle. The FFP Principle represents the difference between providing service and serving. Serving is the action of “anticipating a need,” which can set you apart from other companies.

The final action step is: turn intention into action. Randy says we judge ourselves by our intentions. Others, not knowing our intentions, judge us by their perceptions of our behavior. Making sure we follow through with our intentions, is a key part to becoming a credible leader.

Not only was Randy an incredibly inspirational and educational speaker, but the venue, food, participants, hot chocolate and couch rides all added to this memorable meeting. What a wonderful way to celebrate the upcoming year and challenge us all to become incredible leaders!

CMP Exam Changes Now in Effect

Denise WoodsThose who took the CMP exam in early January are the last who will take the exam the old-fashioned way: with a No. 2 pencil, a paper test booklet and an answer sheet. Beginning July 2012, the exam will only be offered by computer. This seemingly minor change not only impacts the physical act of taking the exam, but also preparation to sit for the exam.

What will not change? The exam will continue to consist of 165 multiple choice questions, each with four possible answers. These must be completed in a maximum of three-and-a-half hours. For now, the study manuals (CIC 8th edition, PCMA 5th edition, International book, APEX glossary) will not change.

What will change? The exams will be offered four times a year, rather than twice a year, or sometime each quarter. The Convention Industry Council (CIC) has not determined the schedule for 2013; however, in 2012 there is an exam scheduled for mid-July and another for early November. Examinees will no longer take the test on the same day, at the same time, at pre-determined cities and locations. There will be a 10-day period in which to take the exam. This will eliminate travel time and expenses.

All exams will be offered through Prometric, a third-party company with more than 400 testing centers around the country. In Minnesota, centers are located in Duluth, Edina, Rochester, and Woodbury. After an application to sit for the exam has been approved, examinees will have approximately six weeks to contact a Prometric site to schedule a time and location to take the exam. The exam must be taken within the set 10-day period, no exceptions. The earlier Prometric is contacted, the better chance a person has of scheduling a date and time convenient for them. Canceling and rescheduling the exam for another time within those 10 days will result in a $75 charge.

A photo ID will be required when checking in at the testing site and personal belongings will be stored in lockers during the exam. Examinees will have an opportunity to work through a brief mock exam in order to familiarize themselves with how to answer questions, mark questions to return to later, use the on-screen calculator for formula problems, etc. This does not count against the three-and-a-half hours of exam time.

Beginning in November, the examinee will immediately receive an unofficial pass/fail notification after the exam has been completed and closed. This will not be available for the July exam. An official, written confirmation will be sent approximately 30 days following the exam (6 – 8 weeks for the July exam).

How does this impact MPI Minnesota CMP Boot Camps? We will continue to offer Boot Camp twice a year, most likely in the spring and fall. Camp for the July exam period will be in early May. Information will be available at www.mpimn.org in the next few weeks.

Complete information about the CMP exam changes is available under Computer Based Testing at www.conventionindustry.org/CMP/CMPCandidates.aspx. I would also be happy to speak with anyone who has questions. I can be reached at 651-796-2186 or dwoods@agcmn.org.

The CMP, being one of the best certifications to achieve career excellence in the industry, has been on my career ‘bucket list’ for some time now. I look forward to the study groups, passing the test, and adding the credentials to my resume. Thank you MPI MN for awarding me this scholarship in order for me to obtain this prestigious certification!
