Global Meetings Industry Day – Minnesota – Overview

Thursday April 12th - Location – InterContinental St. Paul –11:00am – 5:00pm

Our “satellite” version of GMID is taking place on Thursday April 12th at the InterContinental Hotel in St. Paul, MN. Supported by our industry colleagues from the local chapters of National Association of Catering Executives (NACE), Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP), Senior Planner Industry Network (SPIN), Meeting Professionals International (MPI), Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), and Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI).

Meetings Mean Business is an industry-wide coalition to showcase the undeniable value that business meetings, trade shows, incentive travel, exhibitions, conferences and conventions bring to people, businesses and communities. By rallying industry advocates, working with stakeholders, conducting original research, engaging with outside voices and more, the coalition brings the industry together to emphasize its importance. Comprised of over 60 members, the coalition unites the meetings industry with one strong and powerful voice.

On April 12, 2018, leaders from across the meetings and events industry will come together to support the third annual Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID). GMID events will be held across the globe to demonstrate the measurable impact that meetings have on businesses, economies, and communities.

Breakout Sessions (Available at 2:30 and 3:20pm)

Breakout Topic #1: Ethical Leadership
How should we respond to bad actions, especially when the user has a relatively significant level of power or influence? In this session, we’ll examine the trust/distrust one faces when confronted with witnessing unethical behavior. We’ll compare and contrast with leaders who exemplify strong ethical leadership and empowerment. The session moderator will provide simulated scenarios to explore and discuss in small groups, followed by a group discussion to determine the level of seriousness of those articulated unethical violations.

Breakout Topic #2: What You Don't Know CAN Hurt You: Risk Management & Event Planning
From an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas, to an Ariana Grande concert in England, to the 2015 attacks on venues throughout Paris, recent tragedies have placed security at the forefront of event planning. Active attacker incidents are increasing, and the Florida high school and Texas church shootings serve as reminders that tragedy happens anywhere. Investing time and effort early in your event planning process and acknowledging that event security is a team sport will help mitigate the risk of an incident happening on your watch. Despite the spectacular headlines, event planners should first learn the most commonplace factors that impact events and how they can play a critical role in ensuring a safe event. Plan your pre-event intelligence, smart venue selection, real-time vigilance, emergency communications, and, prepare for the day when the risk becomes a reality.
